The timeless Pixar movie “Toy Story” features a ton of characters that know they’re toys but one character, in particular, is much more than that. Buzz Lightyear might be a toy but is a unique cast addition as Lightyear doesn’t believe he’s a toy as he believes he’s a Space Ranger of the Universe Protection Unit on a mission from Star Command.
In the first “Toy Story” movie Lightyear believes he has crashed onto a new planet a.k.a. Andy’s room trying to communicate with Star Command, keeping a mission log, and believes his ship or packaging is his crashed spaceship. Unlike the other characters in “Toy Story,” Buzz Lightyear has an origin story that fans of the beloved franchise will be further explore in the new film “Lightyear.”
Disney will be exploring the more complex backstory of Buzz Lightyear with the new origin film “Lightyear” with a new movie Disney describes as “The sci-fi action-adventure presents the definitive origin story of Buzz Lightyear — the hero who inspired the toy — introducing the legendary Space Ranger who would win generations of fans.” The new origin story movie will be a spin-off from the “Toy Story” film franchise will focus on Lightyear’s life that formed him into the Space Ranger we’ve come to love in the original movies and will also feature some aspects previously mentioned in “Toy Story” films.
The new movie will have some new changes for the Buzz Lightyear character including a rebooted modern makeover for a new appearance and will get a new voice. In the past films, Buzz Lightyear was voiced by Tim Allen, but the new movie will feature Chris Evans also known as Captain America from the “Avengers” Marvel franchise.
Chris Evans is excited about the new role, saying it’s adream come true, and has a love for animated films while looking forward to becoming a part of the Pixar family working with one of the most advanced animation companies. Evans will also be joined with the director and actor Taika Waititi with an undisclosed role in the new movie that will be Lightyear’s sidekick.
Most Pixar films are known for having “Easter eggs” which are small details with a hidden message, character, or image. The new “Lightyear” movie is said to focus less on Easter eggs and will be focusing more on the sci-fi element.
“Lightyear” isn’t the only movie to explore the origins of Buzz Lightyear as Pixar has featured Buzz Lightyear in multiple shorts and a stand-alone story. The new “Lightyear” movie will hit theaters on June 17, 2022 and will later be available on streaming services.
